Fundamental results and algorithmic solutions for 5G Networks


The exponentially growing demand on mobile data rates, the new requirements imposed by future services and the level of required flexibility call for an unprecedented reengineering of the mobile networking architecture. To tackle this challenge, the most prominent strategies foreseen in next-generation (5G) systems are the deployment of Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) and the use of MIMO communications.

The FLAG project aims at investigating such systems, with the specific focus on network scenarios where large antenna arrays are implemented by clustering several base stations together. The project will develop innovative analytical models of these networks so as to derive fundamental results on the system performance and on the existing tradeoffs between quality of service, cost and system complexity. FLAG will then leverage such results as guidelines for an efficient system design. It will define algorithms and protocols for the realization of high-performing 5G MIMO systems, guaranteeing high data rates to slow as well as fast mobile users, with minimal control overhead.

Politecnico di Torino will collaborate with Monash University toward the achievement of these objectives.
