Two open research positions: Onboard compression and security for remote sensing images acquired by next-generation satellites

Organization: Politecnico di Torino, Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Torino, Italy.

Position type: "Assegno di ricerca" (research grant), 1-year contract renewable up to 3 years overall. Requirements: M.Sc. degree in the area of ICT (Communications, Informatics, Electronics). PhD degree in a related field is not required but is a plus. Type and salary to be determined based on experience. The positions are expected to start at the end of 2017 or very early 2018 at the latest.

Current remote sensing systems acquire raw image data that are transmitted to the ground segment, where all processing and image analysis takes place. On the In stark contrast, next-generation remote sensing systems will have onboard processing units with unprecedented computational power. This opens the door to the possibility of processing acquired data onboard, i.e. to produce images, process them in order to extract information, detect events of interest and possibly generate early alarms. The two open positions are in the framework of a newly accepted EU Horizon 2020 resarch project. The candidates will have to work on the following topics.
  1. Design, software implementation and validation of compression algorithms for optical images and SAR raw data. The algorithms will also be presented to the Conultative Committe for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) for possible standardization.
  2. Design, software implementation and validation of encryption algorithms and protocols for onboard acquired data and images. This position is also expected to help in the design of compression algorithms.

We have two open positions for work in the ToothPic start-up, an official spin-off of Politecnico di Torino. The position are for:
