Enrico Baccaglini
Enrico Baccaglini was born in Alba (Cn), Italy, July 4 1979. He graduated in Telecommunication Engineering in 2003 and earned a Ph.D. in Electronic and Communication Engineering in 2007 at Politecnico di Torino.
From March to August 2003 he was a visiting student at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), in the research group of the Laboratoire de Communications Audiovisuelles (LCAV) to complete his graduate thesis 'Multiple Description Coding for Large Diversity Networks'.
From October 2005 to March 2006 he was a visiting researcher at IMEC, Leuven (Belgium), in the DESICS/WL research group. His Ph.D. scholar grantship was sponsored by Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB). From 2007 to September 2009 he was a Post-Doctoral researcher at the Image Processing Lab of Politecnico di Torino.
Since September 2009 he has been an external consultant at ST Microelectronics.
Current foci of research are the field of digital signal processing and transmission, image and video coding, and multiple description coding. He is involved in the development of coding techniques for real-time applications over unreliable networks (such as ad-hoc sensor networks and peer2peer networks).
He is also working on the DiVA project on distributed video delivery (Multiple Description Coding for real-time video transmission over p2p heterogeneous networks)

from 02/10: COAST (COntent Aware Searching retrieval and sTreaming) is a 30-month STREP research project within the European Research Programme 7 and it is partially funded by the European Commission under contract ICT-248036. The project aims to build a Future Content-Centric Network (FCN) overlay architecture able to intelligently and efficiently link billions of content sources to billions of content consumers, and offer fast content-aware retrieval, delivery and streaming, while meeting network-wide Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in content and services consumption.
from 01/08: NEWCOM++ (Network of Excellence in Wireless COMmunications) continues the activity of the European network of excellence NEWCOM, under the 7th EC Framework Programme. While continuining the previous activity on the long-term definition of next generation communication standards by exploring new communication schemes and the related implementation problems, an even stronger attention is dedicated to the effort of bringing together scientists from very diverse areas, from information theory to communication theory and circuit design, thus providing a platform where such expertise can be disseminated.
from 01/08: SEAmless content delivery, an ICT project co-funded under EU's seventh framework (FP7). My research activities are on Multiple Description Video Coding and P2P video streaming.
2006-2007: NEWCOM is a European Network of Excellence funded by the 6th EC Framework Programme and putting together the groups working on the development of wireless telecommunication standards and systems beyond 3G.
12/2006-08/2007: DISPERSE: Distributed image coding for remote sensing applications, a type A project funded under ESA-ITI scheme. The activities have been carried out together with University of Siena.
Lossless image compression is a very important element of on-board data systems in remote sensing applications. However, it can reduce the amount of data to be downlinked by relatively small factors (e.g., 2 to 3 times). We investigate innovative and more powerful lossless compression techniques and, in particular, the potential of distributed source coding, in order to reduce the complexity of the algorithms.
