CARTOON considers an urban opportunistic environment where vehicles, end-user terminals, personal appliances or pocket devices cooperate to transfer the data in a large wireless Internet architecture. The novelty in the considered network paradigm regards the fact that each node can act as packet carrier, or transporter of cached packets, when the network is partitioned and the destination can be reached only through multi-hop communications. This type of networks is considered to be opportunistic (also, delay tolerant) and, as the consequence of mobility and network partitions, can introduce long latencies in the delivery of packets.
The project focuses on devising the algorithms for content distribution and for routing. The main challenge is that the performance depend strongly from the mobility process, which is usually difficult to model.
