How to reach Milan
Milan is connected to the national and international motorway network through four main motorways: The A1 (Autostrada del Sole) motorway connects Milan with central and southern Italy (Bologna-Florence-Rome-Naples-Reggio Calabria). The A4 (Serenissima) motorway Turin-Milan-Venice-Trieste motorway connects Milan with the north-east of Italy while the Milan-Turin-Aosta motorway leads to France and Switzerland. The A7 (Autostrada dei Fiori) motorway links Milan to Genoa and France (via Ventimiglia). The A8 (Milan-Varese-Sesto Calende) and A9 (Milan-Como) motorways link Milan to the northern mountains and lakes.
Most international trains pull in at the monumental Stazione Centrale, Central Railway Station, which is the main railway junction in Lombardy. It lies at a short distance from the city centre and is very well served by two underground lines (lines 2 and 3) and a considerable number of trams and buses.
Milan has two international airports: Malpensa and Linate. Malpensa airport is the main international airport. It handles almost all international flights. It lies at about 50 km northwest of the city. It has recently undergone huge renovation works and a considerable process of enlargement making it one of the most modern hubs in Europe. It consists of two different terminals linked by a shuttle bus. Malpensa is connected to the main railway station by buses which run every half an hour. Linate airport handles most domestic and some European flights. It is around 7 km east of the city centre and it is connected to the central railway station by a shuttle bus running every 20 minutes (in the evening every 30 min.) Also ordinary city buses (n. 73) run from Linate to the centre (Piazza San Babila). Milan is also served by a third minor airport, Orio Al Serio airport, located 45 kilometres from Milan city centre.
